Easter in Wales

As a big fan of Hinterland - a Welsh detective series set in Aberystwyth - decided that it would be nice to spend Easter there and track down some of the locations used.

Good Friday

Of course, I had to put an Agatha Christie connection in there and so on our way we broke our journey at Ross-on-Wye.  Visited the Royal Hotel which was used in the Joan Hickson version of A Murder is Announced:

Some views of the interior - in the film Joan as Miss Marple was coming out of the telephone box just under the stairs (sadly its now a broom cupboard).

The table in the window where the waitress spoke to her:

Our afternoon stop was at Water-Break-Its-Neck Waterfall in Wales - a 20 minute walk brought us to this lovely spot:

We arrived in Aberystwyth late afternoon and pulled Esmerelda into the campsite.  As the sun was shining we decided to make the most of it and walk into Aberystwyth.

After a couple of cocktails we had dinner at the Olive Tree - a Greek restaurant

Easter Saturday

We woke on the Saturday morning to torrential rain - but nothing was going to stop the Hinterland trail for locations

Its amazing how different the actual locations look - this is the entrance to the police station - it certainly was not that grotty in the films

We then went to the cliff railway

Took some photos in the Consti restaurant which had doubled as a hotel in Hinterland - DCI Matthias' ex-wife had stayed here.

No visit to Wales is complete without a snack of Welsh cakes:

The houses used as student accommodation:

After a look around the shops we dropped into the cocktail bar and had a Mad Hatter's Tea Party:

Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday dawned to yet more torrential rain.  Today we took the Vale of Rheidol steam train to Devil's Bridge - another location used in Hinterland.  It is also where Sir Charles Sherringham - Victorian gentleman detective spent his honeymoon and solved a mystery "Death at Devil's Bridge" by Robin Paige.

Hafod Hotel used in Hinterland and Death at Devil's Bridge:

The weather was starting to get worse (if that was possible) so we decided to just do the Punchbowl and 3 bridges (we had done the waterfall walk several times previously).

When we were down by the punchbowl it started to hail so we beat a hasty retreat.

Back at the campsite we had Easter Sunday tea in Esmerelda

We finished the day with curry to warm us up!

Easter Monday

Easter Monday dawned and poor Esmerelda was bogged down in the field because of all the rain.  We had to be towed onto the tarmac road.

On our way home we stopped off at the Newport transporter bridge.

Safely home Esmerelda has had a clean and is ready for her next adventure…..
